I’ve been trading since 1993 and what I appreciate more about online commodity trading is how fast you receive data.

There was a time when I ordered charts from my charting company for the week before to look at how the markets were doing based on last weeks charts. Now I can’t even imagine getting “a day old” data let alone a “week old” data.

So as many of you who are now starting your online commodity trading careers, be grateful for the fast up-to-date data that you receive because at one time, fast data was weeks old sometimes even months old.

So what does that mean now for those looking to start your online commodity trading careers? You want to make sure that your online futures broker has the the platform that you require for your trading style.

If you are a commodity futures option trader, you than need a futures trading platform that allows you to place “legs” of option orders. If you are a futures emini day trader, you need to make sure that you have streaming quotes, flash fills and tick by tick futures trading charts at your finger tips.

Whatever is your trading style, you want to make sure that your online commodity futures brokers has what you need to effectively apply your particular strategies to make money trading futures.

Another benefit of online commodity trading is the order routing and flash fills. Many of the futures contracts that you can trade now, are electronically matched. This means less slippage, more effective and percise fills and better “call backs” from your online futures broker. This plays an important roll as you can’t know where to limit your risk if you do not have a reference point of entry.

Back in the old days, sometimes I waited an hour to 2 hours just to get a call back from my broker about where I got filled. This in itself was nerve-racking especially when you are trading fast moving futures markets like Crude Oil or any of the energies, the U.S. dollar, Bond markets and some grains like soybeans.

You do not appreciate fast fills and fast call backs from your broker or online trading platform till you do not have them anymore.

As you can see, there are many benefits now to online commodity trading than ever before, so take sometime and choose wisely about which futures trading platform really makes sense for your trading.

Remember, there was a time that none of this technology existed so be greatful for what we have now.
